SOURCED NEWS SUMMARY
The news
HM Treasury’s call for evidence on pub and hotel valuation methods closes at 11:59pm on Friday 16 October 2026. Launched on 24 August, the independent review is led by Jerry Schurder. Responses go to PubsHotels.Valuation@hmtreasury.gov.uk using the official documents linked below.
The review concerns the methods used to determine rateable values, not multipliers or reliefs. Its terms say changes will not affect current rateable values; any adopted recommendations are intended for the next revaluation. This is a deadline reminder and explainer, not a newly announced tax reduction.
SANDYCROFT ANALYSIS
Build a small, useful evidence pack
Start by reading the official questions rather than writing a general complaint about costs. Describe the property, the operating model and the particular feature of the valuation approach that needs explaining. A specific example is easier to assess than an unsupported statement that the system is unfair. Identify the period covered by each figure and keep the original records.
Separate facts, estimates and opinions. If a calculation uses assumptions, show them. Explain what would make the methodology clearer or more representative, and connect that suggestion to the review’s scope. Have the person responsible for the business check the submission. Follow the official instructions for confidential material rather than putting sensitive customer or staff information into an ordinary attachment.
SANDYCROFT ANALYSIS
Keep the response separate from the cash forecast
Treat participation as an opportunity to explain the business, not as permission to spend an expected saving. Keep current bills and confirmed commitments in the working cash forecast. Record uncertain policy outcomes in a separate scenario with a named review date. If you need advice on a property’s valuation or an existing dispute, seek appropriate professional help; a consultation response is not a substitute for that process.
The same discipline helps with everyday purchasing. List essential replacements, planned improvements and optional presentation changes separately. Give each an owner and a spending limit. A clearer picture of current commitments can make a decision easier even when the wider policy question remains unresolved.

Make hospitality purchases work harder
For a pub or hotel preparing its next trading campaign, first agree the customer message, dates and staff roles. Check that printed menus, table information and booking pages tell the same story. Print a manageable quantity when details may change, keep the editable master and nominate one person to approve the final proof.
Staff clothing deserves the same controlled brief. Record garment type, sizes, logo position and approved embroidery artwork, and check a sample before committing to a larger run. Sandycroft’s embroidery service and Flintshire Printing are relevant starting points for those separate purchasing tasks. Neither a new uniform nor fresh print alters the valuation review: the connection is disciplined operations, clear communication and avoiding unnecessary repeat work.
