The news
The Competition and Markets Authority opened a consultation on 20 October 2026 about access to near field communication technology on Apple’s iPhone. The CMA proposes requiring Apple to support the two main international approaches, secure element and host-based card emulation, and setting principles intended to make access commercially viable rather than fixing a price itself.
The CMA says the proposals could support services including digital wallets, account-to-account payments, digital identity, travel passes, keys and loyalty products. The consultation closes on 17 November 2026 and a final decision will follow after responses are assessed. This is a proposal about access for developers and service providers; it is not an announcement that an individual merchant’s card-processing price has fallen.

Separate the phone announcement from your till contract
A retailer or café should first identify the part it actually controls. Note the terminal provider, acquiring or payment-service agreement, transaction pricing, contract end date and any equipment rental. Record which payment methods customers currently use from the reports already supplied by the provider. Do not infer a new saving from a national consultation.
If a supplier later offers a new wallet or payment route, ask for the complete commercial terms in writing. Check setup costs, transaction charges, refund handling, settlement timing, chargeback responsibility, support hours and whether the route works with the existing till and accounts process. A lower headline fee can be outweighed by extra administration or slower problem resolution.

Test a new route before advertising it
Use a small, controlled test if a new option becomes available. Confirm a successful sale, partial and full refund, declined payment, end-of-day reconciliation and the customer receipt. Include the person who closes the till and matches payouts, because a payment method is only useful if the back-office record is clear.
Keep the existing customer journey available while testing unless the provider says otherwise. Do not print permanent acceptance marks or promise a launch date until the service is live on the actual equipment. The CMA consultation may influence future market access, but the consultation itself does not make a new wallet usable at the counter.

Keep payment-point information accurate
Where customers need a short instruction at the till, use the provider’s approved wording and marks and keep the message readable. Flintshire Printing can discuss a checked counter card or replacement sign once the payment route and wording are confirmed. Order a sensible quantity so a policy or provider change does not leave obsolete material.
For front-of-house teams, make the handover simple: who can restart the terminal, where failed payments are recorded and when to call the provider. Branded clothing can help customers identify staff, but it does not solve a payment outage. The useful investment is a clear process supported by accurate information.
