The news

The FRC reviewed 10 company reports when examining how businesses explain intangible value drivers such as technology and knowledge. It encouraged clearer links between those drivers, the business model, strategy, future performance and the financial statements.

A separate review examined financial-instrument reporting in 20 listed corporates using UK-adopted IFRS Accounting Standards. The FRC said it found no material IFRS 9 application issues in that sample, while identifying opportunities to improve disclosures on hedge accounting, expected credit losses and debt factoring. This is corporate-reporting guidance for the companies in scope; it should not be presented as a new filing duty for an ordinary small firm.

Sandycroft practical analysis: make the monthly pack explain the business

A small company can borrow the clarity principle without producing a listed-company annual report. Put sales, gross margin, cash, overdue invoices and major commitments on one page, then add short notes explaining what actually changed: a large one-off order, higher carriage, machine downtime, seasonal stock or a new customer.

Keep measures consistent from month to month. If the definition changes, note it. A simple pack that shows the same figures on the same date is more useful than a polished document full of disconnected numbers, particularly when speaking to an accountant, lender or potential investor.

Record valuable knowledge without inventing a valuation

Useful intangible assets can include approved artwork, repeat-order specifications, customer relationships, website content, operating procedures and staff know-how. Maintain an owner, storage location, backup method and review date for each important item. That makes the knowledge easier to protect and use.

Do not assign a financial value merely to make the business appear stronger. Where a formal valuation, accounting treatment or disclosure is required, use appropriately qualified advice. The operational task is simpler: make essential knowledge findable, current and less dependent on one person.

Use the same discipline in customer-facing material

Capability sheets, tender responses and credit applications should connect claims to evidence: services offered, production capacity, realistic lead times, quality checks and relevant examples. Flintshire Printing can produce concise physical materials once the wording is approved, while SellerBundle can help online sellers compare business software. Neither replaces accounting or legal advice.

This week, choose one management report or sales document and remove anything that does not help the reader decide. Add the missing measure, explanation or proof beside the relevant claim. Clear information earns trust because it lets the reader understand the business, not because it uses more pages.
